Bravo pH Testing

Millions of Americans suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Damage caused by GERD can lead to more serious issues like difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), a narrowing of the esophagus, and Barrett’s esophagus.

Bravo pH Testing - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease - GERD

An innovative monitoring system now available at Oceana Gastroenterology may help identify GERD, analyze the severity of your acid reflux, and develop a treatment plan that is most appropriate for you. The Bravo Capsule will be placed under Endoscopic Guidance.

Bravo pH Testing is a simple, convenient, and discreet way to evaluate your gastroesophageal reflux symptoms by measuring pH (acidity) levels in the esophagus.

How Bravo pH Testing Works

During this brief outpatient procedure performed while you are sedated, your gastroenterologist will place a Bravo reflux capsule into your esophagus using endoscopic guidance. Approximately the size of a gel cap, the capsule attaches to the wall of the esophagus where it will measure the acidity in your esophagus over the next 48 - 96 hours, after which time the capsule will pass naturally with a bowel movement.

After placement of the Bravo capsule, you are free to leave the hospital or surgical center and go about your normal activities.

The pH measurements are wirelessly transmitted to a recorder worn on the belt or waistband, which will be returned to the facility's GI lab after the testing is complete for download and analysis. You may also be asked to keep a diary of the times you experience reflux symptoms during the testing.

FAQs: Bravo pH Testing

Where do I keep the recorder during testing?

This reflux-testing system is wireless, making it convenient and discreet, so you are free to move about as long as you stay within 3 feet of the recorder. You can bathe and get a restful night’s sleep because you can place the recorder outside the shower or on your nightstand, and the test will not be interrupted.

Do I continue taking my anti-reflux medication during the test?

This test allows for evaluation of acid reflux both on or off reflux medication, so check with your doctor about whether to continue or discontinue these drugs during the course of the test. Our providers will be able to advise you on alternatives should you be recommended to stop your reflux medications during testing.

Will the test restrict my diet and activities?

It will not. One of the added benefits of the Bravo reflux capsule is that it is so small that you may eat normally and go about your daily routine.

What happens after the test?

After the test is complete, the temporary, disposable capsule falls off the wall of your esophagus and passes naturally through your digestive tract with a bowel movement. The data captured on the Bravo reflux recorder during the procedure will be downloaded to a computer and your doctor will view the test results.

Don’t suffer from repeated bouts of acid reflux a moment longer! Call to see if Bravo pH Testing is appropriate for you.
